Cause Description:
Age, disease, disability, and circumstances may separate some vulnerable populations from the larger community; companion animals don't seem to notice the difference. Some people living in facilities away from home will never again see or touch a living dog or cat. Some have always been animal lovers and owned animals their whole lives. Visiting Pets Program volunteers bring pets and people together for companionship and therapy. Contact with animals can help combat hardships such as fear, loneliness, depression, stress, boredom, and inactivity. Our VPP volunteer teams (handler and certified pet) visit facilities regularly to offer comfort and companionship. Because often when people withdraw from other people, animals can penetrate their walls. Our volunteers (including their pets) have special training and certification to enable them to visit facilities, creating long-term relationships with many who live in them long term or during rehabilitation.
